Raigad Royals is the youngest team in the MPL in terms of the average age which is less than 21 years for the entire 16-man squad. Raigad Royals franchisee holder Cadence, which specializes in manufacturing high end speaker designs, is headed by Ajay Shirke, the president of the Maharashtra Cricket Association, and the treasurer of the BCCI. The Royals became the first team to hire an foreign coach in Dermot Reeve, the former English all-rounder. It was unthinkable but “Shirke magic” is what it can be called getting Reeve, the king of innovation during the 1990’s to coach the Royals. Reeve showed his magic in his first stint itself by maneuvering the Royals to their maiden title in 2009 and his boys did it twice, almost, before failing at the final hurdle in 2010. The Royals have batting as their forte as the overall team, and have an equal mix of city and district players. The Royals squad comprises five batsmen including the likes of Harshad Khadiwale, seven bowlers, including the newly acquired Shrikant Mundhe spearheading the attack, eight all-rounders including the highly talented Nikhil Paradkar and two wicket-keeper batsmen including the State Ranji skipper Rohit Motwani. Khadiwale is the most prolific batsman for the state and acts as a role model for the rest of the squad. Khadiwale was adjudged as the “Best Batsman” of MPL 09 and Digambar Waghmare added another feather to the Royals cap by becoming the “Best Fielder” of MPL 09 and MPL 10. Royals are one of the hot favorites for the MPL 2011title.
